“The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make.” (Quelle: Robert M. Parker, Jr. The Wine Advocate)

“The Riedel family has never stamped its name on a single bottle of wine. But over the past 50 years, this Austrian clan of master glassmakers has done more to enhance the oenophile’s pleasure than almost any winemaking dynasty”. (Quelle: TIME MAGAZINE)

Claus Riedel was the first person in the long history of the glass to design its shape according to the character of the wine. He is thus the inventor of the functional wine glass.

    The Story of Riedel

“Glassmaker” is a title of honor in the Riedel family. At Riedel, the glassmaking torch has been passed over 10 generations. Claus Riedel (9th generation) changed the world of wine with his concept of functional stemware. He first recognized the effect of the glass’s shape on perception and the drinking pleasure of alcoholic beverages. Over 40 years ago he detected that the same wine tasted dissimilar out of different glasses. Georg Riedel (10th generation) further developed this discovery and found that the delivery of a wine’s bouquet and taste depends on the glass’s form. Today Riedel’s extensive range of stemware is layered by sophistication and price category. Riedel provides the world’s only glasses that deliver the typical components of a grape variety, highlighting the balanced flavors, maximizing the fruit, and integrating acidity or tannins into the overall pleasure of wine. In the four decades of its existence in Austria, Riedel has succeeded in establishing itself as a global brand.
